Who Needs Leadership?

Two weeks ago one of our Greeklead teams and I had the privilege of performing leadership workshops at the University of Arizona. You may have heard Arizona universities have a reputation for well... having some fun. As I was flying down to Tucson, sandwiched in my middle seat, I kept thinking about the type of student we would encounter. Do they take life seriously? Were they engaged in developing their character? What was their overall leadership lid? As the questions were swirling around my head, I must admit I lowered my expectations for the type of students I would be working with in the desert. Fortunately, my expectations were shattered!
As we interacted with students, we found leaders all over the campus. They were socially gifted, responsible, driven leaders from all different walks of life. It was one of the best experiences of my leadership development career and I can not wait to return. During this experience I was reminded of the words of the late Steve Jobs in one of his last speeches at Stanford. If you have time watch it below. In the speech Steve refers death many times. In his work "Steve Jobs", Walter Isaacson believes the theme of death in this speech was heavily influenced by the latin phrase "Memento Mori", which basically means "Remember You Will Die". As he stared death in the face, Steve knew two things: 1.His time was limited 2. He needed to make his short time on earth count. But don't we all? The students we engaged at the University of Arizona embodied this spirit of leadership. As we developed their leadership, I could tell they had a desire to make their brief stint here count. We at Greeklead try to live a "Memento Mori" lifestyle. We hope you'll join us. Let's make our short time on earth count.
Jake
